PowerDNS on Rails Status

Reported by David Davidson | April 6th, 2011 @ 02:22 AM

First and foremost, thank you so much for this exciting work and wonderful project! I think this is the best and most highest quality http web front end for DNS, and better than any other one I have ever seen before. My hat is off to the developers and maintainers for this work. Again, many thanks for these efforts - nothing else out there matches it.

I should preface my questions and note that I am not a developer, but I am only just an ordinary user, and especially an ordinary but frequent user and administrator of DNS. I am enamored with PowerDNS and with this project, but I am no stranger to BIND, BIND-DLZ and other implementations.

I did have some questions, and I was thinking about opening a ticket, but before doing so, I noticed that there haven't been any commits for this project on the github page for quite a while, if I am reading everything correctly. I also noticed that there seem to be numerous different forks for this code, which is also very exciting.

I wanted to see if there is a general consensus and get some advice on which one of these forks should I be running, trying and/or testing. I noticed that there was a master branch, but it seems that there are other branches that have many commits since the date of the last commit of the master fork.

My question is this: Is it recommended that I should be testing and/or running a different fork instead of the main branch (i.e. git clone git://github.com/kennethkalmer/powerdns-on-rails.git)? If so, which of the forks is most recommended? The reason I am asking is because I think that it might be possible that somebody else has already encountered and perhaps already fixed some of the same issues I found, and I thought that maybe it might be better off to try a fork instead first.

So I am wondering if anyone thinks that it's better to try a particular fork, and if so, which one would you recommend? Many kind thanks for any responses or some advice.

Please forgive if this is a novice inquiry - perhaps I could search through every commit of every fork and methodically determine which might be best, but I figured there would be a general consensus of what to use like "oh yeah, use this particular XYZ fork" or "better off to just stick with the master" or something to that effect. Again, please forgive if this sounds like a newbie posting - I don't post very often.

Please let me know. Again many kind thanks for this exciting and wonderful work and these efforts!

Kind Regards.

    Hi David

    Thanks for the high quality feedback, I really appreciate it. So here goes!

    The project had gathered dust, but I've been working hard on getting it working and better than ever before. The new work in progress is currently the "feature/rails3" branch. To get going, you'll need the following:

    • Ruby 1.8.7 or later
    • Rubygems 1.3.6 or later (recommend 1.8.4)
    • The "bundler" gem (gem install bundler)
    • Git
    • MySQL client and header files

    The proceed as follows:

    $ git clone git://github.com/kennethkalmer/powerdns-on-rails.git
    $ git powerdns-on-rails
    $ git checkout -b feature/rails3 origin/feature/rails3
    $ bundle install
    $ rake db:setup
    $ ./scripts/rails s

    Then point your browser to "http://localhost:3000" and login with "admin@example.com" and "secret" and give it a go.

    I'll update the README in the master branch on Github to indicate ongoing development on the different branch, that will become master soon.
