Use JSON instead of XML for APIs

Reported by Ask Bjørn Hansen | February 11th, 2009 @ 10:39 AM

JSON is Much Much easier to integrate into most languages than XML. It'd be nice if the APIs were using JSON for data transport instead of XML.

Luckily Rails makes it easy to have all of them, and any others. Can you please use this ticket to start listing your JSON requirements in order of priority so I can help get them in.

I started looking at the code to decipher how to use the APIs. At least in Perl and Javascript it's a gazillion times easier and faster to send and receive data in JSON format than it is XML. (Mostly because JSON is incredibly fast).

Mentally it's also much easier, because JSON maps directly to a useful data structure. It can also keep APIs in different languages more similar.

Basically whenever the system is currently encoding or decoding XML, it'd (in my opinion) be better to use JSON.

(And if you think XML is well supported in all sorts of languages, see the bottom of http://json.org/ :-) )

I agree with you 100% on this one, I also prefer JSON to XML as of late, but coming from Ruby it makes no difference to me because of the hugely capable abstraction libraries.

Very few places currently offer alternative output. I'll stab my way through, starting with the domain lists and and domain views.

But first I want to complete the support for master/slave.

I also have to work on the documentation then, to make sure people can leverage the API's

Thanks Ask, currently busy with this on my local machine. We will be going full JSON in the "feature/rails3" branch. No issue being logged as it is a work in progress.
