Reported by olfway | November 2nd, 2008 @ 01:31 AM

It would be cool if it will be possible to auto-generate PTR records for A records

Fair enough, but what would make it practical from a UI point of view? I don't believe that many DNS administrators manage their PTR records as well, unless they are the ISP or have a flexible ISP (well, in emerging markets thats the case). Thus it should not be a default behavior, but maybe just a tick box when adding records?

    Unless I don't grasp PTR's, I know templates won't solve this issue...

I will be useful if you manage local zone ie i have "mycompany" top level zone, with ip like 192.168.x.x

It can check if reverse zone exist and if entry not used yet, then auto-add it. and i'm fine with checkbox "auto-generate PTR" and (evem better) checkbox in settings "generate PTR by default", so "auto-generate PTR" checkbox will be checked by default

I would suggest that on the forward domain record, e.g. test.com, there is either a) A flag with enables auto PTR creation b) a list of linked Reverse domains (e.g. say test.com maps to 236.5.193.in-addr.arpa or 234.5.193.in-addr.arpa).

When adding or editing an RR record for test.com (lets say we add then we could check for a relevant in-addr.arpa domain being present (236.5.193.in-addr.arpa would do the job) and then delete and add an entry for
